Read Aloud Via Google Hangout!

Today we had the unbelievable opportunity to listen to a read aloud via a google hangout!  Students gathered on the rug to listen to the story.  However, unlike previous guest readers who join us on the classroom rocking chair, Ms. Marcus, our guest reader who presented Wilfred Gordon Macdonald Partridge by authors Mem Fox and Julie Vivas spoke to us through the computer!

Mrs. Fallon visited our rocking chair to show the paper version of the book as we listened to Ms. Marcus.  We watched a google slide show of the pages on our projection screen.  Ms. Marcus conversed with students before and after reading the book.

In this two way  conversation Mrs. Hoyt's computer camera was focused on our students, enabling Ms Marcus to see us and our reactions to the dialog. See the quick snippet of story and make note of the computer on the bottom right connected to our projection screen.

What is exciting about this venture is that it opens the door for many more learning opportunities.  As we explore new learning topics this school year we hope to invite others into our classroom in this manner.  Wouldn't it be fun to have grandparents, aunts and uncles from around the room dial in to read us a story!  When we study community helpers, perhaps we can speak to someone at their job!  The options are endless!
