Happy Halloween

Room 103 has a spectacular Halloween Day!

Students donned bat hats and candy corn necklaces to celebrate Halloween!  After a team photo we headed upstairs to learn about owls with Ms. P of the Burlington Science Center.  

Following the presentation we brought our books and flashlights up to second grade.  After introducing ourselves to our new friends we spent some time doing some spooky reading by flashlight!  

Our afternoon included a story about a witch who created a house from a piece of paper...it became a jack-o-lantern!  We created our November calendars, tried some fun math papers and danced the monster shuffle!

Every student went home with some happy memories, 2 goodie bags and a new book!

Mrs. Hoyt and Ms. Miliano hope all have a great, safe night

We will be thinking about all our kindergartners out to Trick-or-Treating and can’t wait to see the pictures of students in costumes!

Parents - be sure to email Mrs. Hoyt photos of students by 7:45 on Wednesday morning so we may have them ready to share at our morning meeting.

Students - Work with your grown ups to count your candy. We will be graphing the results of how many pieces each student received.

Lots and lots of candy? - Donate some! The Pine Glen PTO will be participating in Operation Gratitude and collecting candy to send to the troops! Candy may be delivered to our classroom box November 1 - 7. Each box will be weighed and the classroom with the heaviest box will be awarded a prize!

Owl Adventures

We started Halloween off with a presentation about another living thing!...owls!  Ms. P from the science center even wore her costume to have some fun! She showed us all the parts of the owl and explained what the owl used them for. We learned about where they live and when they are awake (they are nocturnal)Then she brought out Scout the Barred Owl and Edison the Great Horned Owl. We even got to pose with Edison! 

We learned about the soft, warm feathers and the really big eyes!

Owls have very large eyes.  If a small child had eyes proportionate to the size of owls eyes they would be as big as the ones on this friend!

This is because owls have 14 bones in her neck area as opposed to us humans who have 7 bones.

 An owl's talons are very strong and sharp.

 Scout is an owl that was rescued and now lives at Burlington High School in an outside enclosure.
Scout is cared for by Ms. P.  She came to her at about 3 months old and is now about 3 years old.  Taken from the wild as a very young owl, Scout never learned to survive on her own.  She now helps students in Burlington learn about Owls, animals and living things.

Edison is also three.  As a runt in family, he was knocked out of his nest and fell to the ground.  Ms. P has cared for him since he was resuced.

Be Safe!

Safety has been a school-wide theme this month.

We learned about fire safety and read about fires in our Let's Find Out magazine and then practiced for a fire drill.

Mrs. Tilton, our school guidance counselor spent some time visiting and teaching us about being safe and we had a visit from the Burlington Police Dept.  Safety Officer Schipelliti to teach us about bus safety.

4th Graders Are Fabulous

Welcome back 4th grade friends!  We love greeting our friends with a little wiggle and dance time!

Our 4th grade friends returned this week as we continue to learn together.  4th grade students are working on leadership skills, library research skills and communication and writing skills while they help kindergarten friends learn about research, traits of living things and practice our social skills.  

We are working towards creating  a video presentation that shares the information we learn about animals.  

Partners work together to read and find evidence in the books.  They are looking for evidence that the animals they are researching are living.

Mrs. Hoyt and Ms. Miliano were so impressed with the work ethic of the 4th grade role models that they awarded each student in the class a hoot card....Students certainly are being appropriate, safe and kind friends!

Working together sure is a lot of fun!  We end our visits as they begin with smiles, laughter and dancing!

Great and Greater!

We lined ourselves up to properly compare the number of boys vs the number of girls.  We have been learning to use the terms greater and less in math!

We all agreed that our bat hats are pretty great!
