Kindergarten and Grade 4 Animal Projects

Teachers in both grades 4 and K are super proud of the work completed by students in researching and producing video presentations about animals.  Everyone demonstrated a great knowledge about characteristics of living things!

The videos below are the product of multiple session of collaborating between students.  Each group of student was assigned an animal to research.  They created the background for the show, illustrated the animal in infant and adult stages and then worked together to write a script.  Members of the groups supported each other in rehearsing the presentation to demonstrate knowledge.

Student Council Event

Pine Glen Student Council Fundraiser!

    Have shoes hanging out in the back of your closet taking up space? Soles4Souls can help solve that problem for you!

Soles4Souls is a foundation that donates new/gently used shoes to people in need.   Shoes donated are shipped to people whose communities have been destroyed by disasters. Some of these disasters include hurricanes and tsunamis. This fundraiser is a great way to give hope to people who have lost everything!

What to donate:

• Sneakers
• Boots
• Dress Shoes

    *All gently used*

When to donate:

We will be collecting donations until Monday, January 8th.  

Where to put donations:

Donation boxes will be located outside the office. If your shoes have laces, please be sure to tie them together before placing them in the box.

#Room 103 Reads!

The Pine Glen Community was introduced to a new reading challenge today!  We will be docuementing all the aweseome times, spaces and places students read in and out of school!  As teachers docuement students reading we will be sharing photos on twitter with the hashtag #PineGlenReads.

 At the library we took a few minutes to settle and focus ourselves through mindfulness and meditation before diving into a book.

We all learned our passwords and logged onto the Raz-Kids program to listen to books being read to us.

Burlington High Students (some former Pine Glen kindergartners) visited us and read with us!

Room 103 kicked off the challenge today by reading throughout the day!  We read in the library while listening to Ms. Small, Pine Glen's librarian share a book, we read in the classroom on the computers while testing out Raz-Kids and we read with new friends when Burlington High students visited with us.

Students love reading and being read to.  Please share lots of pictures of room 103 reading in various location! 

We will be sharing the log-on information for Raz-Kids at conferences so everyone can enjoy this reading opportunity at home!

We Have New Amigos!

Our day included practicing social graces with new friends!  Burlington High School AP Spanish students visited us!  We greeted one another in English and then in Spanish.  What happens when you bring a room full of 5 and 6 year old students together with a group of 17 and 18 year old high school students?...Lots of fun, dancing, sharing and learning!

The high school students, along with their teachers, Professors DeSousa and Dacey traveled to Pine Glen to learn and be with us.  The visit could have been intimidating for either group of students but all had a wonderful time!  We know that the best way to put a guest at ease is to introduce ourselves and offer a handshake.  Then we shared our favorite colors and our new amigos translated the words into Spanish.

Next we invited our friends to dance with us.  Nothing like a fun song to help break the ice!  Visiting students and teachers were very receptive and realized quickly that they needed to get to our level (physically) pretty quickly!  There are some pretty great dancers in both groups!

Students  broke off into various sections of the room to read books together.  It was awesome!

 We shared our fun counting game called Boom Counting and  they taught us both number words and color words in Spanish. Our guests were impressed with our special microphone ball and were super impressed with how well we counted in Spanish!

Our visit continued with more fun and dancing and ended with a Spanish thank you and good-bye as well as hugs and high fives!

The teachers all agreed that the experience was muy bien!  We are looking forward to connecting with our new friends again in the spring.

Room 103 friends were so thrilled with their morning experience that they spent some time writing about it this afternoon!  We wrote a thank you note to send to the high school and also wrote entries in our memory books.  Here is what they said:

I read Elephant and Piggy with my buddy.

We read books with the big kids.

We sang with the Spanish friends.

We were saying the numbers and our favorite colors.

We did the Tooty Ta dance.

I learned Spanish.

My friend read me a book.

We spoke the language.

We danced with the high school friends.

December Volunteers

The month of December is going to be a busy one.  There are plenty of opportunities for volunteers!  Events and details of times are listed below.  Please email Mrs. Hoyt if you would like to join us for some activities.

Our 2nd Parents as Partners Reading day is scheduled for December 15.  If you have not signed up to volunteer and find that you will be available, please let us know!  We love to have lots of guest readers!  (8:45 -9:15)

We will be celebrating Polar Express Day on December 15th as well and are seeking 2-3 volunteers to help us with some season craft activities.  (9:15 - 11:00)

Pine Glen's annual innovation day will be December 20th and room 103 is planning a series of special activities.  (8:45 - 11:00)

We may welcome volunteers on other days as well.  If you would like to join us on a given date, please email Mrs. Hoyt to inquire.

Kindergartners love coding!

Kindergartners love coding!  Today we expanded our understanding of the distance we can make the mouse travel by measuring increments using Lego pieces.  This knowledge will translate into creating a multi-step code for the mouse to get from one point to another.  Students love this activity!

Writers Will Be Sharing Stories!

After the Thanksgiving break we will be working on our non-fiction writing of personal narratives. Families, please assist us in this endeavor by taking a couple of pictures of your family celebrations this weekend.  2-3 photos would be ideal as we will focus on the beginning, middle and end of our stories. We have found it was easier for our students to use photographs from their actual experiences to help them remember details as they share.  Please email the pictures by Saturday, November 25th. 

Career Day

Friends in room 103 has fun dressing in the role to represent their future career aspirations! Career day was celebrated today as a school-wide prize as part of our Hoot card program.  Each grade earned a large sum of hoot cards to earn this prize.

We have students who plan to become artists, police officers, fire fighters, a doctor, and a vet. Our class is full of future teachers, art teachers, army guys, a chef and a construction worker!  We also will have business men a Lego master and a farmer in the future!  

Everyone looked great and had a fun time!
