Dance Parties, Reading Buddies and So Much Fun!

Our week last week was full of dancing, reading and more!  We love school.

We had a great time at the Pine Glen Dance Party...........a celebration held to recognize the student body for all the Hoot cards earned in September.  Great job!

Our first session of Reading Buddies was held on Friday.  Special thanks to our friends and guests who came to read with us!

It is only the 2nd week of our news.  Everyone is doing a wonderful job of hunting for the words!  

Friday we spent time working on the cover of our Nursery Rhymes book.  Everyone enjoyed making this book.

As writers we have been practicing how to share and comment on one another's work.  

We took our ST Math time work on the road this week!  Mrs. Fortunato and a team of teacher worked with us to complete some assessements and we used our ipads to work on ST Math while waiting our turn.  Mrs. Hoyt and Mrs. Kerr are very impressed with how expertly everyone is able to access the app!

Room 103 was invited to visit with and take a shake break with students in Room 109.  We have some new friends who we will be working with throughout the year!  It was great fun dancing with students and teachers!

  

After all of the excitement of dancing we worked together to calm ourselves down before returning to the classroom to work.

We have many choice activities that students explore when they complete work.  This is a matching game that helps with sorting skills to support both ELA and Mathematics.  The sorting material include faces to help us work on our social emotional skills1

Other bin activities have challenges to help us practice sight words and pencil grip.

Library

We went to the library today.  Thank you to Mr. Donoff who jumped in to lead our class as Ms. Small was home sick.

Mrs. Kerr and Mrs. Hoyt  are very impressed !  Students are learning the words in the rotten apple game!  We love playing Rotten Apples!

We will have a class quiz mid-October.  Students will be assessed with flashcards and will be given a written assessment in which we ask them to write the words.  This is an extension of learning.  If students can know and write the words they will be able to use them in their writing.  

Reminder - Homework Folders are due back on Fridays.  Congratulations to our hard working friends.  We have received many homework folder with the New challenge completed already.

Choice Empowers Our Learners To Be Their Best!

Students have lots of choice in how they learn in room 103.  They work collaboratively, communicate with

classmates and teacher and are engaged!  When we break off to work on tasks, students are given the

opportunity to work anywhere they would like with the stipulation they are safe and are able to be the best student

they can be.

Flexible seating empowers students.  Visitors to our room may see students lying on the floor, sitting at low tables on their knees or on pillows, standing up or sitting in chairs.

We have many school tools that are utilized daily.  Tool kits, glue sponges, wipes and more!  Some students

utilize specific tools to help them be their best. We have elastic bands to to help us wiggle our feet while sitting,

chairs for the rug that allow us to rock while sitting and other chairs with bumpy cushions and firm backs.Thanks to a 

generous grant from the Burlington Education Foundation(BEF) during fall 2017, we have a wide range of

cushions, chairs, pads and stools!

When students are comfortable and properly hugged in their seats they are able to be their best selves!

Students love our scoop rockers and the various options of working at low tables and high tables!

We even have comfy bean bag chairs that are great to enjoy a book in or to sit in to take a break!

Winding Up Our Week!

Meet Madeline

Friday fun included learning about bus safety and practicing how to evacuate the bus in an emergency.  

 Prior to boarding the bus to practice kindergarten students assembled in the cafeteria and met with a Burlington Police Department safety officer.

Stuffed Animal Day was a hit!

Writers share their work with one another!

We plan to visit the library each week.  Generally we plan to attend on Thursdays.  Please return books in student backpacks each week.

We are learning to use shelf markers to save a spot for a book while we look at it and decide if we will check it out. 

The library is part of the LTC - Library and Technology Center.  While at the library students also had the chance to explore the Maker Space.  Currently there are small blocks of wood and students are encouraged to see what they can create with them.

Next week will continue our colorful days as we kick off the week with purple on Monday.

4th Grade Fun

Our classroom and rug felt a little fuller on Thursday.....we met some new friends from 4th grade!  Room 103 is very lucky because Mrs. Clancy's 4th graders will be our buddies this year.  This week we met, spent some time together reading and dancing and then invited them to help us with an activity.

As we introduced ourselves it was also a wonderful time to introduce the Qball, our microphoned ball!  We love it!

We spread out throughout the classroom to find quiet nooks to read with friends.

4th grade buddies can be extra fun when older siblings come to visit!

Mrs. Hoyt and Mrs. Kerr were very impressed with how well the K students did working with the "big" kids.  They were also very proud of their former K students who now serve as wonderful role models!
