2018 Pumpkin Growing Contest

Every other year the Science Center holds a growing contest for Burlington’s elementary students.  This year’s contest is the largest pumpkin!  Every classroom K-5 receives a greenhouse growing kit from the center so each student can sprout their own plants to take home.

The Science Center will send out entry forms to take home with your students.  All pumpkins will be weighed in the FALL by the Burlington Post Office and will receive an official stamp from the post office.  The pumpkin cut-off “weigh date” will be Friday, September 28th.  All entries must be turned into the Science Center by Friday, October 5, 2018.  Please include a photo of your pumpkin! You can get the entry form and information here.

We will award prizes for the top 3 heaviest pumpkins.  All growers who participate in the contest will receive a certificate and goody bag.  Good luck and don’t forget to take a picture of your plant for us to share! (no matter how big or small it is)

We are learning to plant and will be bringing home our seedling entries later this month.  Please help us continue to care for our pumpkin plants!

Back From Vacation and Back To Work!

We returned from vacation focused and ready to work. Monday began with the excitement of sharing the adventures that students had while away from school.  Jamal was able to share videos and photos of his trip to Uganda.

We started a new book on planting and we planted our own seeds that we will sow over the next few weeks with the hopes of producing a rainbow full of colorful flowers!   We learned that plants need light, water, soil and nutrients to grow and change. 

Today we read a Let's Find Out on Growing Carrots and we watched a video on plant needs. We also started a new science observation journal to help us track the changes that we notice as our plants begin to grow.

Room 103 is full of writers, gardeners, scientists, artists, mathematicians and more!

Magnets!

To help us wrap up our study of magnets, Mr. Musselman of the Burlington Science Center was in to visit the kindergartners and shared with us his magnet program.  We learned how strong magnets can be and discussed many of their uses.  Through some scientific exploration we determined that magnets stick to metals like iron, and nickel.    He showed us many different kinds of magnets (such as bar, horseshoe and circular) and told us various stories about them.  We learned about electromagnets.  These need electricity to become magnetic. The pull of an electromagnet is only temporary. 

Mr. Musselman challenged our thinking with a few questions.  He asked if size matters.  Are bigger sized magnets stronger than smaller magnets. We also discussed pull and attraction compared to a push and repel and observed magnets with same and opposite poles.

Mr. Musselman invited Allie to help him test out some materials to see if they are magnetic.

We learned about poles.  Magnets are attracted to opposite poles.

Students and Mr. Lyons were invited to participate in an electromagnetic tug-o-war!  They were not strong enough to separate the magnets!

Vacation Week Is A Great Time To Read!

Vacation week is a great time to sit down, relax and enjoy a good book!  It is also a great time to write....perhaps even write a story!

Kindergartners in Room 103 were asked to keep in touch with teachers over the vacation week and share what they are doing.

Shiven has been enjoying the Dr. Seuss book, Put Me In The Zoo!  This is a fun book and a great pre-curser to our trip to the Franklin Park Zoo after vacation week!

What other books and writing activities have our friends been up to?!

We can also try out some new crafts and activities, like Mansimar!  Be sure to record all you are doing in your journal!

Spring Senses

  Students in room 103 have been exploring poetry and have collaborated to create a Spring senses poetry book!  We are all looking forward to seeing, smelling, touching, hearing and tasting all that Spring has to offer!k

A Brood Of Chicks

    Our brood of chicks spent their last full day in room 103 today.  We had them out and walking around to visit with students.

We have been very observant scientists noting what we see, smell, hear and feel.  Great describing words were used to explain what was observed.  The feisty chicks have grown, flap their wings and are very soft. We could feel their bones in their legs and noticed that they go the bathroom a lot!

Ms. P will be picking up the chicks tomorrow.  Room 103 has very much loved learning about the life cycle of chicks in this hands on opportunity.  

Pip, Pip, Pip.....Crack, Crack, Crack!

Ms. Miliano arrived to discover that we have eggs that have started to pip and in fact 2 chicks have already managed to hatch!  It will be a very exciting (and noisy!) day in room 103!

The Science Center is looking for homes for some of its animals over April vacation.

Animals are distributed on a first come, first serve basis. All animals must be picked up by making an appointment with Ms. Pavlicek.
