When you are an expert at spelling your name you can use the letters as a tool to practice counting!  Nice job Callie!  It looks like the letter E used a lot of counters!  

Ipads, News and Apples

Mr. Donoff, Pine Glen technology specialist visited our room to help introduce the Dexteria app.  We really enjoyed pinching the crabs and tracing the letters!

We practiced hunting for our sight words in the news with Mrs. Hoyt.  We are expert word hunters.  Mrs. Hoyt challenged everyone to continue hunting at home and to complete the Kindergarten News work for homework.

Mrs. Hoyt shared about her snack on Friday.  Lots of us enjoy apples and we knew almost all of the parts of the apple.  We were able to identify the stem, leaf, skin, seeds, core and flesh!  Everyone agreed to share their knowledge by labeling an illustration of an apple.

Writers practiced their labeling skills.  We labeled the parts of an apple.  

 Classroom visitors include cockroaches and a tarantula.  We love observing them as we go about our day.  We will be studying various animals as we learn about the characteristics of living things.

Reading Buddies

Today Room 103 was lucky to have parents and  volunteers in to read to the students.  It was awesome!  The students listened to the guests read some of their child's favorite books from home.  It is so important for young readers to be read to and see the true value of reading. 
Guest visits such as these allow us to practice many of the social skills we work on in class.  Students were asked to introduce themselves with a handshake and at the end to practice our good manners and thank our guests.
We also had parents participate in movement breaks. All danced to the songs Tooty-ta and  Macarena Months. Thank you for spending time reading, moving and sharing with us today!

 We were lucky to have Elias' mom, Olivia's mom and Valentina's mom join us along with Mrs. Babajtic and Mrs. Wasserman who are retired friends of Mrs. Hoyt!

Thank You Parents

Boys and girls in room 103 were discussing what it meant to be kind and polite today.  We are practicing our manners and using the words please, thank you, excuse me and I am sorry.  We are a very polite class.  We are also a very appreciative class and would like to say thank you to our parent volunteers.  Parents have begun to join us during our day and are a very appreciated addition to our classroom!  

On Friday we will host our first Reading Buddies session. Thank you to those who can join us to read!

Animals Are Creeping Into Our Room

We have our first animal visitors!  Students met Ms. Wendy Pavlicek of the Burlington Science Center today.  Mr. P brought us hissing cockroaches and a tarantula, both of which are now guests in room 103.

We will watch and learn about them as we begin our year-long study about the needs of living things.  Everyone was enthralled to learn about the vacuum cleaners of the forest.  We learned the cockroaches are nocturnal and many already knew that means they are up at night!  We learned about how they eat and how they use their antennae to understand and feel their environment.

Tornado is a rose-haired tarantula who loves to eat crickets.  Like the cockroaches us their antennae, Tornado uses the thousands of hairs on his body to feel and sense the world around him.  Both animals prefer a calm and quiet classroom...we are up to the challenge!
