Halloween Costume Sharing

 With or without costumes, we have a class full of cuties!  Thank you for sharing your wonderful children with me!   Have a safe and happy weekend!

Names and Greetings

 Over the past week we have been greeting one another with other languages!  Our class is rich with knowledge of many languages.  In addition to learning to say hello we also share how names would be written and pronounced.  Here are our class names in Telegu!

Student of the Week

 We celebrate our first Student of the Week this week!  Congratulations to Hansika!  

This week she shared a little about herself when she taught us to greet our peers in Telegu and shared one of her special dresses and told us about a holiday she recently celebrated, Vijayadashami ( Dussehra).

Developing Hand Strength for Scissor Skills and Handwriting

 Believe it or not, young students must develop the strength of the muscle in their hands.  Here are some fun ways to help do this.  Special thanks to Mrs. Hoyt's frend, Pine Glen Occupational Therapist, Mrs. Haroutunian for compiling this list of ideas!

1. Squish, squeeze, poke and manipulate play dough or putty.

2. Play with rubber bands (use geoboards, make them in a rubber band ball, wrap them around a tennis ball can, etc)

3. Pulling apart construction toys (such as Duplo bricks, LEGO bricks or pop beads)

4. Squeeze  "popper toys"

5. Squeeze stress balls or other fidget toys

6. Using eye-droppers to transfer water

7. Use tongs to squeeze and grasp small objects (such as pom poms or blocks)

8. Scrunch newspaper or other paper into balls and throw them

9. Tear and rip paper into small shreds

10. Sharpen pencils with a hand held pencil sharpener.

11. Squeeze a hand-held hole puncher or craft punch

12. Squeeze a sponge to soak up water and squeeze out the water again (ie. washing outdoor toys or furniture)

13. Squeeze bath toys

14. Squeeze juice from an orange (or other fruit)

15. Squeeze a water spray bottle  to water plants.

16. Squeezing clothespins.

17. Playing with wind-up toys.

Fundations Letter Writing

  Fun with writing our letters in Fundations!  We will begin to learn to write our letters the kidnergarten way.  When practicing at home parents may find it helpful to know the language we use to form each letter.  See the slide below and click on any letter for the words to know how to write the letter.

Greeting Friends

  This week we have learned from our classmates and families.  Thank you to Madeleine, Joyce and William's moms for teaching us our morning greetings in Spanish, Chinese and French.

Today William's mom even translated everyone's names!  How fun!

Next week Hansika and her mom will teach us to say hello in Telegu.  Share with us.  If you are a multi-lingual family contact Mrs. Hoyt and we will plan a date for you to help us learn!

Funny Faces Writing and Labels

 

We are full of funny faces!  We thought about all the emotions we could have our jack-o-lanterns have.  With the hopes that we can ask Mr. Hoyt to carve a pumpkin students worked to convey their ideas.  Mrs. Hoyt suggested that drawings with labels and a sentence may be helpful.  

What a fun way to practice our skill of adding labels to our work!

5 Little Pumpkins Challenge

Kindergarten Families,

This week we will be reading, listening to and watching online versions of

the story Five Little Pumpkins. We will compare and contraste the

similarities and differences and will become 5 Little Pumpkins Experts! 

As part of our morning work we will be illustrating our own 5 Little Pumpkins

scene.. Once again, I will be encouraging students to  retell the story to

their families. Everyone seemed to love doing this for the 3 Little Pigs! 

I sent home tongue depressors and small white pom poms to use as props,

or students may be creative and have other options at home.

Please encourage your child to tell you the short story.

Use their pumpkin scene, the tongue depressor or other props at home.

Consider video recording your child’s efforts.

Email the videos to me. I will share the videos in class and post

them on the blog for all to see.   If you decide to share,

please send your videos by Wednesday, October 28th.

R is For Robot

 After reading the book R Is For Robot A Noisy Alphabet by Adam F. Watkins this week we created our own robots!  Great job friends!

School is a Hoot!

 We fit a lot into our days!  This morning, after reading both fiction and non-fction books this week that featured owls, we created our own owls!

Pumpkins!

 We will talk and learn about pumpkins next week.  Today we decorated a pumpkin face and added our name!
