We hope all have had a terrific time with family and friends and are ready to dive into more learning and fun in 2019!

We strive to learn in creative ways.  Sometimes this approach has our teachers scrambling for supplies.  In addition, there are some other items we like to keep stocked throughout the school year.  Perhaps you can help us out by contributing something from our wish list.

Warm Holiday Wishes

Dear Room 103 Families,

We would like to extend warmest of Holiday Wishes to all of our students and families. Students have explored a variety of holidays over the past month or so and the common thread of focus is that they are all about families, love and celebrating together.  Mrs. Kerr and I will be celebrating Christmas with our loved ones and will also enjoy some much needed rest and relaxation! We love our job and students. Having supportive and wonderful families make it even more pleasurable.

Enjoy your family time and gatherings!   There are no official homework assignments until January 2019. Of course, we encourage everyone to spend some time reading.  Each student was also given a new journal and we have suggested they write in it over the break. We would love to read about the adventures and activities of the next few weeks!

Happy New Year to all.  We look forward to seeing everyone in 2019!

Mystery Makes It Magical!

Mystery and Magic make this time of year exciting.  In recent lessons we have be motivated to write in response to the challenge of guessing what is in the mystery stocking.  Students have felt the stocking and then written guesses that explain thinking.

Today we took the mystery in another direction as we participated in a directed drawing activity.  Students had no idea of what the outcome would be but had to listen to directions carefully and create a drawing using the Drawing Pad app.  It was exciting for everyone to figure out what they were drawing as each detail was added!

Show And Tell Success!

A great time was had sharing our special treasures this morning!  Students practiced being great listeners and worked to ask thoughtful questions.  Presenters had to speak clearly and loudly as they told us about the item they brought in.  We learned about history and sharks.  We met baby dolls and even learned about a Porsche!

Imagination - What Can You Do With A Box?

In the recently released movie, Instant Family, actor Mark Wahlberg played role of a frustrated adult who could not believe the enthusiasm children had for boxes!  Instead of focusing on the contents, the children played with the boxes when the gifts were opened for Christmas!  Mrs. Kerr and Mrs. Hoyt knew our students would enjoy boxes just as much!

We spent that last day before vacation enjoying an open ended opportunity to create!  Mrs. Hoyt read Antoinette Portis' book, Not A Box.

We enjoyed it so much, we also watched a video version, see below:

Then Mrs. Hoyt invited students to think about what they could do with a box.  Students colored and played with really large boxes and then designed and built other creations with smaller boxes.

Solar Beads Winter Vacation Experiment

The Burlington Science Center teachers, Ms. P and Mr. Musselman are encouraging students to learn about UV light during the winter break.  Student brought home challenge kits today.  Watch the video for further information!

Snowballs and Snowmen with Grade 4

Friends from grade K and 4 met in room 103 today for a morning full of snowballs and snowmen!  We made I Spy snowballs to enjoy over the holiday break, created snowmen following the rules of a glyph and rolled snowmen using dice.

We practiced all of our social skills while we chatted and worked.  During our snack time we enjoyed our parties in a bag created by our families - Thank you!  We also exchanged our plans for activities during the upcoming vacation week.  

Teachers were all smiles as they watched students working so well together!

ST Math 100% Club

Congratulations to Tristan and Eliana our first and second students to have completed the ST Math program for the 2018 - 2019 school year.  They are the first members of our 100% club!

We Visited 2nd Grade

We had a special opportunity this week when friends in 2nd grade invited us to read with them in their room!  We practiced introducing ourselves and then listened intently as our new friends practiced reading with voice, fluency and expression.  It was a wonderful visit and collaboration!
