Fun Filled Friday

We had a fantastic and fun-filled Friday.  At times it may have been frenetic with all the excitement, but  everyone worked hard and had a blast!

We jumped into our day with some reading!  Special thanks to our adult guests who read with small groups.  We invited them to dance and help us send the month of November off as we did the Macarena Dance to welcome December.

Our next adventure involved trash....and thanks to contributions of recyclable materials, we had lots to work with!  Students were challenged to creatively repurpose discarded items.  What fun we had...and  what a mess!

Our 4th grade friends were great supports and helped us with some of the cutting and gluing!

We made binoculars and musical instruments and ornaments and key chains.  Such creative students!

After creating, each student then wrote a reflection on the experience.

Next we visited with Ms. P of the Science Center.  She shared that Jan Brett's book, The Mitten is one of her favorites and then taught us about the animals in the story.  We learned about the hedgehog and then got to see a live one!

After lunch, our 4th grade friend Gwyneth returned to read to us!   Gwyneth recalled that it was kindeness day in November so she made each student a bracelet as a gift.  How kind!  Mrs. Hoyt and Mrs. Kerr are impressed that Gwyneth is learning all the students names and chooses to visit room 103 as her prize for doing great work in her classroom!

Our day at school was full of fun but it sure was tiring.  Mrs. Hoyt and Mrs. Kerr were ready for a nap by the time the students went home!

The Mitten - Retell Challenge

Today Ms. Pavlicek from the Burlington Science Center came to show us the Hedgehog Show. Earlier this week the kindergartners listened to the story The Mitten and we did a craft to reinforce the knowledge of the animals in the story. We learned that all the animals mole, rabbit, owl, badger, fox, bear and mouse are all animals that can be found in North America. The only animal in the story not found in North America is the hedgehog. The students enjoyed learning more about the hedgehog and then actually see Rascal the hedgehog run around in his little playpen and then all students were given the opportunity to touch the hedgehog. 

As another fun, optional challenge we are encouraging our students to retell the story of The Mitten. We have read the story, retold the story in class and learned about the animals featured in it at a hedgehog presentation by Ms. P. of the science center.  If your child needs a refresher here is a YouTube video of the story being read aloud.
