Amazing Learners

 Lots of learnign occuring with our kindergarten friends!  Students are sharing that they enjoy writing, playing math dice games and have even begun to practice their sight words!  Way to go kindergartners.  You are amazing!

Writers Need Love and Patience

Dear Kindergarten Families,

Do you remember the joy of watching your child take his or her first steps? 
Those first wobbly steps are so magical! When children first begin to take
those first timid steps, it doesn't look much like walking.  A child may stumble
and fall hundreds of times, but, cheered on by his adoring caregivers, he or
she keeps trying. We know that the stumbling is part of learning to walk, and
we celebrate the effort the child is making.

Learning to write isn’t all that different from learning to walk.  When children
first begin to make marks on the page, it doesn’t always look like writing. 
And yet, when we celebrate all that they are trying to do as writers, children
will continue to try.  When they continued to try, they get better at writing
-and that is our goal!

Here are some things you can say to encourage your child along the way:

• Wow! You’ve done so much writing!
• Can you tell me about some of your writing?
• I can tell that you’ve been working hard.
• I love looking at your writing.

Sometimes beginning writers have trouble remembering what their writing says.
If that happens you might say, “You’re the writer. What did you want it to say?” 
Or ”Let’s look at your picture. Is there something in the picture that can help
you remember what you wanted to say?”

Watching your child learn to write can be just as magical as watching your
child learn to walk.  So enjoy the moment and celebrate the process!

Rainbow Writing

 

Over the past couple of weeks you may have noted that I ask the students to rainbow write.  The idea is to find ways to practice in a fun way.

 

Rainbow writing is a fun way to use repetition to help practice writing/spelling. It's a simple process where you use multiple colors of pencil or crayon to create a fun rainbow effect when you write.Jan 2, 2019

 

This week we will continue to rainbow write when we trace over lines and continue to practice our names and write numerals. 

 

Please encourage your child to write( and not color) when rainbow writing.

Raz Kids

 Information was shared with families about Raz-Kids.  You can sign your child up to have access to a library full of resources.  We will be utilizing this app later in the year but all are welcome to explore at any time!

Track The Temperatures At Home

 

We are tracking the weather and temperatures and the number of days we have been "in school".  This could be an easy home connection that your child may enjoy doing as well.  You could have him/her buiold a paper chain to replicate the temperature.  There is 1 link added each day.  As the chain grows, students will see a visual of the temperature trends.  Plus they can practice counting the links as a way of practicing counting with one to one correspondence and as a way to see how many days we have had class. 

As of Friday, we had completed 10 days of school!  Mrs. Hoyt would be happy to share the temperature recordings thus far with anyone interested.  Note the thermometer above that we reference to decide what color to record on our chart.

Swimming Into Seesaw

 Mrs. Hoyt is amazed at all the kindergarten students have accomplished in such a short time.  We are now setting a timer on an ipad, are navigating daily use of two apps (ST Math and Lexia) and are today waded into the world of the Seesaw app.! 

We took selfies and shared some of the name art we are creating!  The Remote Academy Kindergartners are amazing!

Three Little Pigs

All About Room 103

Thank you for sharing your All About Me papers!  As we build our class community, we will find ways to connect.  Look at each image and find out about our class friends!  We will not be sharing all future work, rather just some snippets of our fun and activities.

 

Caught Doing Good

 Mrs. Hoyt and other guest teachers will be watching for kindergartners who are doing good.  Eyes focused, participating, engaged and trying their best.  

When parents pick up materials on Thursday at the Science Center, there will be a special package of prizes for each student.

Students will be earning stars and when they earn 10 stars and have a full row, parents may let their child select one prize from the bag.

Colors of Kindergarten

 Our first week together was great fun!  Thank you to our families for all the efforts at home to enable us to connect and learn together.

We spent our first week comparing the colors we were wearing and read books about the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue.  This week we will continue with the colors purple, black, white, brown and pink.  

Please send Mrs. Hoyt photos of the work your children does at home, I would love to see their work and their smiling faces!

Hansika shared her new shirt!  It says kindergarten is magical!  Mrs. Hoyt agrees!

We strive to learn in creative ways.  Sometimes this approach has our teachers scrambling for supplies.  Perhaps you can help us out by contributing something from our wish list.

Toolkits, Journales and Other Supplies

 

Lots of materials were packaged for pick up last week.  Please make sure you have the contents that should have been included:

pencil box

pencils of varying sizes

crayons

glue stick

scissors

eraser

foam circle (pool noodle piece)

gel bag (hair gel and food coloring)

journal (photo above)

When you picked up the ipad you should have been given a dry erase pouch, dry erase marker and a few papers (plain white and blue bingo grid).

Note about school supplies:  Typically in a classroom setting we only make the supplies we will be utilizing available to students as needed.  Otherwise, they can become distracting, lost or damaged.  You may want to establish a spot to have supplies stored when not being utilized.

Three Little Pigs

   

Retelling stories is a wonderful and fun kindergten skill. I will be reading a few versions of the story of the Three Little Pigs and will be encouraging students to retell the 3 Little Pigs story to their families.

Students love doing this!

I have made a few props and will share them with the kids as I retell the story. I will suggest that if students would like an extra idea for work at home they attempt to create some props to help tell the story.

In past years, families video recorded their child’s efforts and emailed the videos to me.  We shared the videos with the class and posted them on the blog for all to see.  I would love to see how your children retell the story of the 3 Little Pigs and am hoping to have all our students participate in this activity this year!  If you decide to participate and share,  please send your videos by Friday, September 25th.
